Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) - Summer 2010

The Office of Undergraduate Research is now accepting applications for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF-UH) program. The SURF-UH program awards $3500 stipends to students interested in conducting a full-time, 10 week summer research project in any field under the mentorship of a UH faculty mentor. The student first secures the research project with the faculty member, and then the student and faculty member apply for the program collaboratively online.

All continuing UH undergraduates, who have not previously participated in the SURF-UH program, with at least a 3.0 gpa are eligible to apply as long as they are not graduating in spring 2010 or summer 2010. The deadline for SURF-UH 2010 is Wednesday, March 24th. Applications are available online at http://uh.edu/honors/undergraduate-research/uh-research/surf/index.php.

Also, save the date for the Provost's Undergraduate Research Scholarship (PURS) program for fall 2010. The deadline is Wednesday, April 21st. All full-time juniors and seniors, who have not previously participated in the PURS program, with at least a 3.0 gpa are eligible to apply for this part-time semester research opportunity. The Cancer Prevention Education: Student Research Experiences program at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center enables students to work in a research environment with extensive epidemiologic, laboratory and clinical facilities under the supervision of an established investigator on the faculty of M. D. Anderson, as well as attend seminars and lectures. A total of eight students will be selected to participate in the 12-week program. Students must have either (a) completed their sophomore or junior year and be enrolled in anundergraduate degree program classified as a junior or senior by September 2010, or (b) completed their undergraduate degree (no earlier than December 2009) and be accepted to start a graduate program by September 2010. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Participants in the program receive a stipend of up to $2,166 per month for the three-month period. The completed application—consisting of an application form (attached), résumé or curriculum vitae, a brief statement of intent, a letter of recommendation from a professor or academic advisor and a copy of transcript with grades—must be submitted by March 3, 2010. The Academic Associates Program allows undergraduates to gain exposure to emergency medicine clinical research. Participants observe the clinical practice of emergency medicine through active involvement in various clinical studies taking place in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Texas Children's Hospital. Also, the program provides access to clinicians and researchers that may lead to mentor-mentee and other valuable professional relationships. The program is a collaboration between the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's. Applications will be accepted through June 12. On January 12, a 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti’s capital city, Port-Au-Prince, causing massive devastation and a humanitarian crisis. Thousands have lost their lives and many more are at risk. Millions of dollars have been donated from around the world while Government agencies and non-profits are continuing to respond. The consensus among government leaders and experts is that the best way to show our concern is to give money to established organizations working in Haiti such as the American Red Cross, UNICEF, Americares, CARE, Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, and many more that are rated at www.charitynavigator.org. Ways to donate money efficiently include:

1. Text “Haiti” to 9099 to donate $10 to the International Response Fund.

2. Text “UNICEF” to 20222 to donate $10 to this United Nations organization.

Student governments at several colleges have established the College Haiti Earthquake Fundraising Challenge to encourage campuses to compete in raising money for Partners in Health (PIH), a well known non-profit that has been active in Haiti for 20 years. The AIDS Advocacy Organizer will be provided with:

FREE Housing in a town house in Reston, Virginia located a few miles south of Washington DC
Office space in the AMSA National office in Reston, Virginia for completing projects
Supervision and mentoring from the JRLD and AAN-SC
A budget to complete projects and attend meetings that will enhance AMSA's position as a grassroots AIDS advocate
Ideal applicants:

Have advocacy experience though it is not required
Will be available by Oct. 1 (or earlier) through December
Have some background in AIDS related issues including The Ryan White Act, PEPFAR, and trade related issues involved with access to HIV/AIDS medications
If candidate has minimal background in these issues, is willing to spend the first few weeks of the internship learning about them
· Above all, is passionate about advocacy and understand the importance of mobilizing for change.

Dates of fall internship are approximately Oct. 1 to Dec before the holidays; dates are flexible. Please include these in your application. Winter Internship dates are approximately Jan 5 to March 31 (also flexible); application is due by Nov. 15 for this cycle. AMSA is unable to offer a stipend for interns at this time. AMSA does offer free housing near its headquarters in Washington, DC, and the AAO will have stipend support for expenditures on behalf of AMSA (travel to meetings, etc.) and for programming.

Students should have some prior lab and rodent handling experience, a strong background in Biology and/or related fields, and passion for science and research. (4/21/09) ART AUCTION & COMEDY SHOW
The University Center and the Student Program Board are collaborating forces on April 21 to host a unique night of art and entertainment.

The Paint the Town art auction and LMAO! comedy show will take place that Tuesday in the UC Houston Room from 7 p.m.-to-10 p.m. The evening’s festivities will start with a silent art auction featuring artwork from UH students.

Singer/songwriter Shotgun Honeymoon will perform throughout the hour-long auction. At the end of his set the emcee of the night’s events, UH Student Government president Sam Dike, will announce the winners of half of the art auction items.

The comedy showcase featuring Owen Smith and Ronnie Jordan will then take place from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Dike will announce the remaining auction winners some time between the comedians’ sets or at the end of the showcase.

All of the money collected from the auction will go to buying art supplies for the Boys and Girls Club of Houston. One item will be bid upon by the University Center and permanently displayed within the building.

Any UH student wanting to participate in the auction must register online at www.uh.edu/ucaf by April 8, 2009. There is no cost to sign up. All art work must be submitted to the University Center’s Administration Office (Room 282) from April 13-to-17 from 9 a.m.-to-5 p.m.

Officer Duties/Positions: (From our ByLaws)

E. Duties of the Officers

The President shall

o Preside at all general membership and special meetings, and call all AMSA-PreMed UH meetings to order, and shall adjourn each said meeting, and shall prepare an agenda for discussion of business items.

* Set program/event planning meetings, volunteering, speakers, and other activities.
* Serve as liaison between American Medical Student Association and other registered student organizations.
* Prepare up-to-date office hours lists and be responsible for their filing.
* Be responsible for evaluating each Officer’s adherence to the American Medical Student Association’s Constitution, Policies, and Expectations.
* Assume responsibility for a specified committee whereby the chairperson has resigned or has been removed until a replacement can be selected.

o Appoint committees and serve as ex-officio (non-voting) of said committees.

* Vote only if his/her vote breaks a tie vote, create a tie vote (as desired by the President), or if voting is done by ballot.
* Have full participation and knowledge of all AMSA budgets, as well as careful attention to budget requests, expenditures, and balances. Assist the treasurer in the preparation of a budget for his or her term of office by June 1.
* Participate in selecting and interviewing prospective officers and chairpersons for AMSA.
* Assume or delegate any responsibilities as needed.
* Appoint interim officers, should a vacancy occur.
* Help set and ensure the carrying out of goals and plans.
* Review, Sign, and Approve legal and financial documents pertaining to AMSA- PreMed UH.
* Responsible for writing recommendations and correspondence letters to sponsors and philanthropies.

o Serve as a chapter delegate to the Premedical Caucus at AMSA's National Annual Convention each March (or select a surrogate if he/she chooses not to attend).

* Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

The Vice President shall

o Be an aide to the president- in writing of recommendations and correspondence to sponsors & philanthropies.

* See to it that all activities taken by the chapter are in accordance with the bylaws of the constitution.
* Maintaining contacts with the other UH pre-health organizations.
* Organize and plan doctor Shadowing activities
* Organize and plan AMSA-PreMed UH socials and mixers.

o In case of the absence or disability of the president, assume the duties of the president.

* Organize and contact speakers for meetings.
* Be primarily responsible for the entire recruitment campaign for AMSA; this includes all aspects of the preparation of publicity materials (pertaining only to recruitment), advertising, brochures, press releases , and summer orientation scheduling, workshops and/or recruitment activities.
* Be primarily responsible for creating the process in which new members are recruited into AMSA.
* Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

The Treasurer shall

* Maintaining chapter checking and savings accounts.
* Overseeing the handling of funds and donations
* Formulating a weekly up-dated budget to fit the needs of the chapter.
* Notifying the other officers of budgetary problems.
* Documenting any monetary exchanges and tracking receipts.
* Give reimbursements to officers/or members who have spent personal monies for projects, pre-approved by a majority of the officers.
* Being in charge of funding meetings, events, and projects.
* Maintaining a contact relationship with an accountant in the handling of chapter taxes and tax status.
* Processes memberships and give a list of new members to the Secretary.
* Order T-shirts during the summer for the 1st meeting of the Fall semester.
* Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

The Secretary shall

o Keep a written record of all meetings (general membership meetings, executive, etc.) in order to provide the chapter with a record of issues discussed, problems posed, ideas raised and of the people who participated in the group discussion for benefit of the chapter and its members.

* Publish and distribute minutes of all official meetings, as well as maintain annual history and an accurate membership database.

o In case of absence, have a substitute appointed that day by any member of the executive committee.

* Keep a listing of current contact info for national and local AMSA-PreMed UH members.
* Monitor and update the member listserv semesterly/or yearly as needed.
* Maintain a semesterly event calendar (Including, but not limited to: upcoming meetings, socials, workshops, volunteer projects, conferences, and fundraisers)
* Send meeting reminders to members one week before the meeting, and other such reminders for events.
* Update the AMSA listserv weekly.
* Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

Historian shall

* Overseeing photography of chapter meetings, events, and members.
* Providing a summary of events and pictures to the chapter website.
* Update the website with information about upcoming events, bi-weekly
* Forming a monthly chapter newsletter for the members.
* Increasing the history and future of AMSA by maintaining a list of all the activities of the chapter over the period of a semester/and year.
* Work with graphics and logos of the chapter to ensure quality production of newspaper ads, flyers, and other promotional materials for AMSA events and programs.
* Work with the Marketing and Membership Director on creation of flyers for meetings.
* Incumbent Historian will organize the selection for the design of the t-shirt during April-May, and the entering Historian will produce a final copy and send to the Treasurer for ordering by August.
* Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

Membership Director

* Orders recruitment materials from National AMSA by July
* Assist the Vice President in recruitment planning for freshman orientations and other such activities.
* Create sign-in sheets and maintain member records of attendance at meetings and events.
* Identify semesterly ACTIVE members of AMSA-PreMed UH.
* Advertise AMSA-PreMed UH by creating and organizing the posting of flyers (e-mailing flyers to officers one week prior to meeting for posting).
* Ensure that press releases and the Daily Cougar are notified of AMSA-PreMed UH activities and listed on the Daily Cougar calendar.
* Assist the President in serving as a liaison between AMSA and other registered student organizations.
* Promote AMSA-PreMed UH activities and meetings through contacting professors of pre-medical courses, and other venues (Honors, NSM Listservs, etc).
* Make and maintain AMSA-PreMed UH tri-fold for display at orientation and other such functions with updated pictures and officer information.

Summer Research Program:In conjunction with Rice University, UH-AGEP sponsors a spring research program where we seek to provide community, training, inspiration, and research opportunities for the students. For these ten weeks, we provide funding so that undergraduates and graduates can work on research projects with the goal eventually presenting their results at a national conference or in a refereed journal. All the students present their work at our closing banquet at the end of the spring. We provide mentoring relationships for the students and also have community building events such as field trips and socials and mandatory Friday meetings which include seminars by prominent scientists and engineers and workshops on professional development.
The Summer 2009 program will run June 5 - August 7, 2009. Applications are due Thursday, April 2, 2009. We anticipate having 30 undergraduates and 15 UH graduate students in our program. Only US Citizens and Permanent residents are eligible. We especially encourage underclassmen who have tonot participated in research before to apply.All research must be conducted under the supervision of a UH-affiliated faculty advisor. The anticipated stipend will be $4000 for undergraduates and $5250 for graduate students. Undergraduates will be expected to work full-time with no other outside employment commitments or classes. Current graduate students will be paid as a half-time GA and must register and apply for a GATF for a full summer load of classes.

His research is primarily concerned with: 1) stability control during human walking; 2) predicting risk of falling for the elderly; and 3) preventing fall accidents using ambulatory measurement technology. The Houston—Galveston Schweitzer Fellows Program, of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, provides service opportunities and support for graduate students in health-related fields and undergraduates certified to practice upon graduation (i.e. social work, nursing, etc) who seek to help those currently underserved by our healthcare system.

Each Schweitzer Fellow designs and carries out a community service project of at least 200 hours of direct service that is beyond any course requirement. AMSA is funding eight delegates to attend. Anyone who is interested in serving as a member of this delegation must complete this application by the deadline (in 12 days). If you are interested in serving as a self-pay delegate (as a delegate NOT funded by AMSA to participate), let us know and we can consider your candidacy for an additional non-funded delegate slot - you will still need to complete this application.

We have an amazing two days lined up-- including the former head of the special pathogens branch of the CDC who's work with Ebola and Lassa Fever inspired The Hot Zone and Outbreak!

We also have Bates, Guide to the Physical Exam author, Dr. Lynn Bickley who will be talking about the use of physical exam in resource poor settings, as well as Dr. Ed Zuroweste from Johns Hopkins and the Pennsylvania department of health, who will be speaking on immigrant and migrant health issues!

In addition to our great speakers we have clinics, workshops, a residency fair, and a Research Poster session.

TWO days of programming from December 5th-7th, with the first day focused on access issues and underserved populations, and the second day focusing on global health issues (abroad and at home) and international health opportunities.

Specifics:

Saturday programming will highlight the health issues concerning immigrant populations to the US, border health, rural healthcare access, the effects of poverty on global health, sexual education in conservative areas, transgender health, complementary and alternative medical approaches to patient care, and the growing importance of geriatric-specific care.

Sunday programming will focus on international health issues, inviting experts to speak on Diabetes and Tuberculosis, the global burden of HIV, infectious disease, industrialization and toxicology, and sustainability in international health work.

We're always on the lookout for curious, energetic, and hardworking students (medical or premedical) who are passionate about enhancing medical education and improving health care. Internships are typically 4-8 weeks in length and held at the AMSA National Office in Reston, Virginia, just 45-minutes outside of Washington, D.C. Position dates are flexible and available year-round. Although AMSA does not provide a stipend, free housing is available and we are pleased to offer you a letter of recommendation upon the successful completion of your internship (in addition, some 4^th years succeed in getting elective credit for their time).

Right now, we welcome interns interested in working on the following projects:

Patient Safety

Interested in helping to improve the quality of medical care in the US? Help AMSA build a platform on patient safety. In this role, you will be working with the Director of Student Programming, and various AMSA Action Committees. As an intern, you will conduct background research into curricula and/or policies related to patient safety, quality improvement, and medical error. Help us to identify how medical students should respond to errors and how they can be advocates for quality improvement. Your work will involve helping to draft AMSA's first primer on patient safety as well as building resources for the first Professionalism and Patient Safety Institute and the full-day Pre-convention program.

Professional Development

Medical and premedical students alike find themselves confused and overwhelmed by the lengthy and convoluted process of medical professional advancement. From the MCAT to specialty licensure, there are at least 50 steps, some with decision points, and many with resources available. AMSA would like to support students by developing a "Roadmap" that outlines the path to becoming a doctor. Help prepare a print and an electronic version of this Roadmap while helping to explore other ways for AMSA to impact professional development (as an example, might entail a lit review on leadership training and leadership competencies for physicians, etc).

Video Editing Galore

AMSA needs someone with the technical talent and creativity to take footage of some of AMSA's coolest activities and turn them into educational and inspirational videos. We have a handful of projects in this realm, would-be-films ranging from our "Circle of Healers" Retreat to a workshop on skills for political activism to a workshop on how to engage in curricular reform at your school. Help us share this great programming with all of our members.

Improving the Clinical Experience

If you have a passion for exploring and furthering medical education … have we got challenging and rewarding work for you!

Largely because of the efforts of AMSA and other allied activists, we've won many victories so far in the reauthorization of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), making it a stronger bill that moves from the 2003 emergency response to HIV to a more sustainable global health plan. Some victories include authorizing $50 billion over 5 years, striking the abstinence-only earmark, free opportunistic infection drugs, health professionals and systems strengthening, nutrition and provisions for addressing gender inequality.

Thanks to those of you who have contacted your Members of Congress – your voice truly makes a difference! But work remains to be done. We must have 60 votes in the Senate for the bill to pass.

Call your Senators today and ask them "to support a PEPFAR bill at $59 billion strengthened by 140,000 new health professionals, and pick your three favorites...

E. Duties of the Officers

The President shall

o Preside at all general membership and special meetings, and call all AMSA-PreMed UH meetings to order, and shall adjourn each said meeting, and shall prepare an agenda for discussion of business items.

Set program/event planning meetings, volunteering, speakers, and other activities.
Serve as liaison between American Medical Student Association and other registered student organizations.
Prepare up-to-date office hours lists and be responsible for their filing.
Be responsible for evaluating each Officer’s adherence to the American Medical Student Association’s Constitution, Policies, and Expectations.
Assume responsibility for a specified committee whereby the chairperson has resigned or has been removed until a replacement can be selected.

o Appoint committees and serve as ex-officio (non-voting) of said committees.

Vote only if his/her vote breaks a tie vote, create a tie vote (as desired by the President), or if voting is done by ballot.
Have full participation and knowledge of all AMSA budgets, as well as careful attention to budget requests, expenditures, and balances. Assist the treasurer in the preparation of a budget for his or her term of office by June 1.
Participate in selecting and interviewing prospective officers and chairpersons for AMSA.
Assume or delegate any responsibilities as needed.
Appoint interim officers, should a vacancy occur.
Help set and ensure the carrying out of goals and plans.
Review, Sign, and Approve legal and financial documents pertaining to AMSA- PreMed UH.
Responsible for writing recommendations and correspondence letters to sponsors and philanthropies.

o Serve as a chapter delegate to the Premedical Caucus at AMSA's National Annual Convention each March (or select a surrogate if he/she chooses not to attend).

Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

The Vice President shall

o Be an aide to the president- in writing of recommendations and correspondence to sponsors & philanthropies.

See to it that all activities taken by the chapter are in accordance with the bylaws of the constitution.
Maintaining contacts with the other UH pre-health organizations.
Organize and plan doctor Shadowing activities
Organize and plan AMSA-PreMed UH socials and mixers.

o In case of the absence or disability of the president, assume the duties of the president.

Organize and contact speakers for meetings.
Be primarily responsible for the entire recruitment campaign for AMSA; this includes all aspects of the preparation of publicity materials ( pertaining only to recruitment), advertising, brochures, press releases , and summer orientation scheduling, workshops and/or recruitment activities.
Be primarily responsible for creating the process in which new members are recruited into AMSA.
Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

The Treasurer shall

Maintaining chapter checking and savings accounts.
Overseeing the handling of funds and donations
Formulating a weekly up-dated budget to fit the needs of the chapter.
Notifying the other officers of budgetary problems.
Documenting any monetary exchanges and tracking receipts.
Give reimbursements to officers/or members who have spent personal monies for projects, pre-approved by a majority of the officers.
Being in charge of funding meetings, events, and projects.
Maintaining a contact relationship with an accountant in the handling of chapter taxes and tax status.
Processes memberships and give a list of new members to the Secretary.
Order T-shirts during the summer for the 1^st meeting of the Fall semester.
Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

The Secretary shall

o Keep a written record of all meetings (general membership meetings, executive, etc.) in order to provide the chapter with a record of issues discussed, problems posed, ideas raised and of the people who participated in the group discussion for benefit of the chapter and its members.

Publish and distribute minutes of all official meetings, as well as maintain annual history and an accurate membership database.

o In case of absence, have a substitute appointed that day by any member of the executive committee.

Keep a listing of current contact info for national and local AMSA-PreMed UH members.
Monitor and update the member listserv semesterly/or yearly as needed.

Maintain a semesterly event calendar (Including, but not limited to: upcoming meetings, socials, workshops, volunteer projects, conferences, and fundraisers)

Send meeting reminders to members one week before the meeting, and other such reminders for events.
Update the AMSA listserv weekly.
Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

Historian shall

Overseeing photography of chapter meetings, events, and members.
Providing a summary of events and pictures to the chapter website.
Update the website with information about upcoming events, bi-weekly
Forming a monthly chapter newsletter for the members.
Increasing the history and future of AMSA by maintaining a list of all the activities of the chapter over the period of a semester/and year.
Work with graphics and logos of the chapter to ensure quality production of newspaper ads, flyers, and other promotional materials for AMSA events and programs.
Work with the Marketing and Membership Director on creation of flyers for meetings.
Incumbent Historian will organize the selection for the design of the t-shirt during April-May, and the entering Historian will produce a final copy and send to the Treasurer for ordering by August.
Attend and actively participate in monthly member meetings and all officer meetings.

Orders recruitment materials from National AMSA by July
Assist the Vice President in recruitment planning for freshman orientations and other such activities.
Create sign-in sheets and maintain member records of attendance at meetings and events.
Identify semesterly ACTIVE members of AMSA-PreMed UH.
Advertise AMSA-PreMed UH by creating and organizing the posting of flyers (e-mailing flyers to officers one week prior to meeting for posting).
